Esther’s Little black Book of Beauty – London

Lucky me, I’m always on the move and everywhere I go, I keep my eyes peeled for all things fabulous and beauty related. And with so many great findings, I couldn’t resist sharing them. So watch this space for a series of my special insider city guides. First up, London!

London calling!

ESPA Life at the Corinthia: This was the spa opening of 2011 and no wonder! I was treated to a tour of the spa that spans over 3,000 square foot with their naturopath, Hannah Yang. Then I blitzed away the winter blues in the steam rooms, sauna and the wet room that has showers of all different pressures, ranging from the waterfall-like to a light sprinkle that feels like you’ve been transported straight to the rainforest. I topped all this off with a heavenly ESPA massage then left floating on air!

Harvey Nichols: Department store beauty halls can sometimes be so huge that you need a Sat-Nav to navigate them! Yet you can find some really great gems if you know where to look. On a recent trip to Harvey Nick’s, I discovered This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. It’s a lightly tinted serum that contains arnica and vitamins A and C to hydrate and add a lovely, hydrated flawlessness to pins!

Hari’s King’s Road: Amazing colourists are hard to come by so once I find one, I hang on for dear life! Mel at Hari’s salon is an absolute miracle worker. I pop and see her every few weeks – then top it off with a fantastic blow-dry with John.

Diptyque’s Marylebone store: I love musky fragrances and anything containing fig, which always reminds me of my fruit farm in Spain. Diptuque’s Marylebone boutique is a treasure trove of heavenly fragrances. Figuier Verte Candle is lovely to burn on a rainy day in England as it instantly transports me to warmer, sunnier climes!

BOY Chanel

Although the idea of punk princess Alice Dellal and Chanel didn’t immediately go hand-in-hand, Karl Lagerfeld obviously knew better!

Shot to promote the new Chanel Boy handbag collection the bags are just as covetable as ever, with a far rockier edge than the normal tweed and pearls we see from Chanel.

I do wish she didn’t have holes in her fishnets tho…

If Chanel is a bit out of your price-range, take a look at the fabulous Adhoc for inspiration! Situated on the King’s Road, the shop is a right of passage for every girl that dreams of being an Alice when they grow up.

Tuesday Tips!

When it comes to acne, I am a firm believer in ‘inner health for outer wellbeing’; what happens on the outside is quite often a reflection of what is happening on the inside! Poor diet and a body that is too acidic can lead to spots and other skin problems. I often work together with our in-house nutritionist Kim Pearson, who can offer nutritional advice to prevent future outbreaks. Sometimes it can be as simple as cutting out excessive amounts of dairy or getting more protein into your diet!

I would also recommend supplements, which can really help; Cosmedix Complete Greens Balance will help you to be more alkaline and Cosmedix Clarity skin supplements which can help clear acne. Available at all EF MEDISPA locations.

One of the causes of a body being too acidic is actually poor excretion. So, another solution for acne (which is not often mentioned) is colonic hydrotherapy. A colonic will get your system moving again and help make the body more alkaline. Many clients describe a course of colonic hydrotherapy as the best facial they’ve ever had! We have colonic hydrotherapy suites at both EF MEDISPA Chelsea and St John’s Wood.

Don't let bad skin make you self-conscious!

How to do an at home facial

Here’s something for the weekend for you all – my top tips on how to do an at home facial!

STEP 1: Cleanse your skin with a good cleanser to remove daily dirt and pollution. If you have oily/combination skin use CosMedix Purity Clean to deep cleanse your pores and exfoliate your skin. For dry skin, CosMedix Benefit Clean gently removes dirt without drying or stripping your skin of its natural oils.

STEP 2: Exfoliate your skin. City pollution, humidity and dead cells clog up the pores and can leave the skin looking dull and patchy. Exfoliation removes any build-up and encourages new cell turnover. Dampen your face and massage the exfoliator onto the face in a circular motion, avoiding the eye area. Concentrate on the areas around your nose, in your T-zone and, on your chin, especially if you have combination skin and find those to be greasy patches. Use a hot flannel to remove the product – the heat will open up your pores in preparation for step 3. Pure Enzymes from CosMedix is great for all skin types as it gently removes dead skin using 100% pure cranberry and L’lactic acid .

STEP 3: Apply a mask. If you have combination skin, use a clay-based mask. If you have dry skin, use a gel or cream-based product. Alternatively apply a hydrating and anti-aging mask to plump, firm and refresh your skin, suitable for all skin-types. Dermaquests C-Lipoic TX Mask is packed with vitamin C and other antioxidants to help build collagen and strengthen the skin. Leave the mask on for 5-7 minutes (this may sting a little but this is normal) and then remove it with a cold wet towel or with cotton pads.

If you don’t want to apply a mask you could lie down for 15 minutes with cold cucumbers on your eyes to refresh your eyelid area and put yogurt on your face. Yogurt contains lactic acid which will help to lighten and brighten the skin. Note; please don’t use yogurt if you are lactose intolerant!

STEP 4: An effective after-mask treatment to boost collagen production and keep your skin is CosMedix Affirm, a powerful antioxidant! This will deeply penetrate the layers of skin in order to strengthen the cells as well as to deliver vital nutrients and provide hydration. To moisturise your skin, SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel containing hyaluronic acid binds the moisture in your skin leaving it supple and strong, or you can use a moisturiser. Work the product between your hands to warm it up, then massage the moisturiser into the face and, in particular, target the areas which move most frequently, such as the mouth, forehead and around the eyes.

STEP 5: Don’t forget your vital weapon against aging; that all-important SPF. Dermaquest’s ZincClear SPF 30 contains Zinc Oxide which easily absorbs into your skin without leaving a residue and provides broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Finally a great eye gel to use is SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel, this breakthrough serum-in-a-gel contains a synergistic antioxidant combination to help protect the delicate eye area, while targeted actives revive under-eye skin and reduce the appearance of puffiness.
